A young left-handed ballplayer throwing with the left arm, glove on the right hand

If your child throws left-handed, they need a left-handed throw baseball glove, labeled Left Hand Throw (LHT) — one that’s worn on the right hand. That sounds simple, but youth lefty options are thinner than you’d expect: when we checked Rawlings’ range, fewer than half of its youth-level baseball gloves offered a left-hand-throw option, and many come in a single size and colorway.

Every youth glove below is a current model we confirmed is offered in left-hand throw, in the size listed, on the manufacturer’s site. They’re all Rawlings because Rawlings’ own site shows left-hand-throw stock for each item number, so we could check it directly. Specs and age groups come from Rawlings’ listings, and the picks are our editorial recommendations. We haven’t tested these gloves ourselves and don’t give them scores.

Prices are approximate US street prices from manufacturer and retailer listings we checked in October 2026, and change often. “Left-handed available” reflects what we could verify for the specific model — left-handed stock often covers fewer sizes, patterns, flexes or colors than right-handed, so always confirm the exact configuration on the retailer’s page before you order.

Our take

For most left-handed kids between about 8 and 12, the Select Pro Lite 11.5" is the glove we’d start with. It’s light, made of leather that’s soft enough to close without a long break-in, and the Youth Pro Taper fit gives a slightly smaller hand opening for better control. At 11.5" with a Pro H web, it works in the infield, on the mound and in the outfield — useful when youth coaches rotate positions.

Our take

Young kids often struggle to squeeze a glove shut. The Sure Catch line is designed around that, with a heel cut-out that makes the glove easier to close, a soft leather shell and a Velcro wrist strap for small hands. At 10.5" it suits T-ball through about age 8 or 9. If your child is at the bigger end, Rawlings also sells left-hand-throw Sure Catch gloves in 11" and 11.5".

  • Narrow fit suits youth hands in a bigger glove
  • Rawlings donates a youth glove to Aaron Judge’s All Rise Foundation for each one sold

Important considerations

Our take

As players reach 10U to 14U and start playing the outfield more, they need a longer glove with more durable leather. The Foundation Series 12.5" is all leather on Rawlings’ 302 pattern, with a Pro H web and a narrow fit that suits youth hands in a bigger glove. It needs more break-in than an entry-level youth glove, but it will hold its shape longer.

Our take

The Flex Palm 11" is a low-cost leather glove for younger lefties, with TPU inserts in the palm that help kids close the glove and add a little hand protection. It’s close to game-ready out of the box. It’s sized for T-ball to 10U, so treat it as a glove for a season or two rather than one to grow into.

Our take

For a committed travel-ball player, this Heart of the Hide uses the same premium steerhide as Rawlings’ pro gloves, but with ContoUR Fit, which Rawlings designs for smaller hands. The 12.5" outfield pattern suits older youth outfielders. It’s a big spend for a growing player and still needs break-in, so it makes most sense for kids who play year-round.

  • Single-post double-bar web and Sure Catch heel cut-out for easier squeezing
  • Lightweight leather, rated 10 on Rawlings’ player break-in scale

Important considerations

  • Only useful at first base — kids who rotate positions also need a fielder’s glove
  • Older or bigger players will want a 12"–13" mitt
  • Camel only
CHECK PRICE — retailer link coming soon Retailer: Retailer link coming soon

Our take

Left-handed infielders usually end up at first base, because the throw from second, short or third goes across a lefty’s body. A real first base mitt makes catching throws much easier for kids, and this 11.5" Select Pro Lite mitt has a single-post double-bar web and an easy-close Sure Catch heel. If your child rotates around the infield in younger rec leagues, our Best Overall pick is the better all-round glove.

Our take

Lefties often play the outfield, where a little extra length helps. This 12" Select Pro Lite sits inside Rawlings’ youth outfield range (11.5"–12.25") and keeps the light, easy-to-close leather of the series, so it’s manageable for 9–12-year-olds. Older or bigger outfielders may be ready for a 12.5" glove like the Foundation Series.

Buying Guide

How to choose a youth glove size

Rawlings’ general sizing chart is a good starting point:

  • T-ball (ages 3–6): 8.5"–10", all positions
  • Youth (ages 7–12): infield 10.25"–11.5", outfield 11.5"–12.25", first base mitt 11.5"–12"
  • 12 and up: infield 11.25"–12", outfield 12"–12.75", first base mitt 12"–13"

Treat these ranges as general guidance. Glove sizes are measured from the tip of the index finger to the center of the heel.

Why age alone isn’t enough

Two 9-year-olds can have very different hands, strength and experience. A glove that’s too big flops around and is hard to close, which leads to dropped balls and frustration; a glove that’s too small leaves the hand exposed. If your child is between sizes, younger and less experienced players usually do better with the smaller glove, while confident older kids can size up. Avoid buying a glove two sizes too big to “grow into.”

Hand size and fit

Have your child try the glove on (on the right hand for a lefty): fingers should reach close to the ends of the finger stalls, and the wrist strap should fit snugly. Youth-specific fits — Rawlings’ Youth Pro Taper, ContoUR Fit and narrow fits — have smaller hand openings so the glove doesn’t slip. Velcro or adjustable wrist straps help younger kids keep the glove on.

Position

Young kids often rotate positions, so a utility glove around 10.5"–11.5" is the safest choice. As players specialize, outfielders benefit from a longer glove with a deeper pocket, pitchers from a closed web that hides the ball, and first basemen from a dedicated mitt. Left-handed kids most often settle at pitcher, first base and the outfield.

Break-in requirements

Stiff gloves are hard for small hands to close. Rawlings rates its gloves on a player break-in scale — lower numbers are closer to game-ready. The youth Select Pro Lite, Sure Catch and Flex Palm gloves are rated 10, the Foundation Series 20, and the Heart of the Hide ContoUR Fit 35. Buy higher-end gloves well before the season so there’s time to play catch and work the pocket in.

Leather vs synthetic

Synthetic and very soft “starter” gloves are light, cheap and need no break-in, which suits T-ball. Leather gloves cost more but form a pocket, hold their shape and last longer, and quality youth leather is soft enough for young players to close. Every pick in this guide uses a leather shell; the Renegade catcher’s mitt in our adult guide pairs a leather palm with a mesh back.

Left-Handed Considerations

Why youth lefty gloves are harder to find

Left-handed throwers are a minority, so manufacturers make left-hand-throw versions of only some youth models, often in one size and one colorway. Popular sizes sell out first, especially before spring season. In our research, several youth models had a left-hand-throw option that was out of stock, including a Foundation Series youth first base mitt and an older Select Pro Lite first base mitt. Shop early, and have a second choice ready.

Ordering the correct throwing hand

Order by the hand your child throws with, not the one they write or bat with. A lefty thrower needs a Left Hand Throw (LHT) glove, worn on the right hand. Labels vary: some retailers say “Right Hand” or “Worn on Right Hand” for the same LHT glove, while Rawlings’ site asks “Which hand do you throw with?” Check the selected option says Left Hand Throw or LHT, and that the item number changes when you select it. If you’re not sure which hand your child throws with, watch them throw a ball a few times before buying.

Hand-me-downs and team gloves

Team bins and siblings’ old gloves are almost always right-hand throw, which forces a lefty to catch and throw with the same hand. It’s worth buying your left-handed child their own glove early, and labeling it — LHT gloves look very similar to standard gloves at a glance. For more sports equipment for left-handed players, see our guide to left-handed lacrosse sticks.

Before you order: a left-handed checklist

  • The listing’s selected option says “Left Hand Throw” or “LHT” (worn on the right hand).
  • The item number or SKU matches the left-hand-throw version.
  • The size fits your child’s age, hand and main position — not just their age.
  • It’s a baseball glove, not a fastpitch softball glove.
  • The glove is soft enough for your child to close, or there’s time to break it in before the season.
  • The retailer accepts returns on unused gloves in case the wrong hand arrives.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best left-handed youth baseball glove?

For most left-handed kids around 8–12, we’d pick the Rawlings Select Pro Lite 11.5" (SPL115KB) in left-hand throw: light, close to game-ready and versatile across positions. Younger kids may be better off with the Rawlings Sure Catch 10.5".

What size glove does a left-handed 8-year-old need?

Rawlings’ chart suggests 10.25"–11.5" for infield and 11.5"–12.25" for outfield for ages 7–12. Many 8-year-olds do well with a 10.5"–11" utility glove, but hand size, strength and position matter more than age alone.

Does my left-handed child need a left-hand throw or right-hand throw glove?

If your child throws with their left hand, they need a Left Hand Throw (LHT) glove, which is worn on the right hand. Ignore which hand they write or bat with — only the throwing hand matters.

Why does a left-handed glove say “Right Hand”?

Some retailers describe gloves by the hand they’re worn on. A glove for a lefty thrower goes on the right hand, so it may be labeled “Right Hand” or “Worn on Right Hand.” Look for “Left Hand Throw” or “LHT” to be sure.

Should I buy a glove for my child to grow into?

Not by much. A glove that’s too big is hard to close and control, which makes catching harder and less fun. Choose a size that fits now, or go one size up at most for an older child who’s close to the next range.

Are left-handed youth gloves harder to find?

Yes. Fewer youth models are made in left-hand throw, often in one size and colorway, and they sell out faster before the season. Shop early and confirm the exact item number is offered in LHT.

Does a left-handed kid need a first base mitt?

Only if they regularly play first base. Lefties often do, and a youth first base mitt such as the Rawlings Select Pro Lite 11.5" (SPL115FFC) makes catching throws easier — but they’ll still need a regular glove for other positions.

The Bottom Line

The most important step in choosing a lefty baseball glove for your child is ordering a Left Hand Throw (LHT) glove, worn on the right hand. After that, size for your child’s hand and position, not just their age. The Rawlings Select Pro Lite 11.5" is our best overall left-handed youth baseball glove, the Sure Catch 10.5" suits younger players, the Foundation Series 12.5" fits older kids, and the Flex Palm 11" keeps costs down. Lefty youth stock sells out, so shop early and double-check the item number.
